Advent Devotion for December 13

To Christ before His Coming
by J. Stephen Lang

I heard that on some dark Judean plain
You’d be a helpless child, an innocent
With no more power and might than day-old kittens.
It seems most inappropriate, Lord of Days,
Crying and gurgling—ah, unless, perhaps,
Even from birth you aim to show your strength.
Yes, yes, like heroes in the Greeks’ old tales,
You’ll strangle serpents from the cradle’s edge
And rock the very earth on which you step.
No?  Why then, forgive my false assumption.
Do as you will.  Be born in circumstances
Obscure and crude.  It is, I guess, a wise
Decision –you will take them by surprise
In this first coming, as your second will.
